type 1 & 2 educational series - diabetes canada
Supporting Canadians Affected by Diabetes
Diabetes Canada is Canada’s leading national organization dedicated to diabetes, serving over 11 million Canadians who are affected by diabetes and prediabetes, and their caregivers. The organization has deep historical roots in diabetes care, tracing back its origin to the era of insulin discovery in Canada, and it continues that legacy today through accessible and approachable diabetes education and support, research, advocacy, and prevention.
Diabetes Canada reached out to us in 2020 with the specific goal of creating an accessible educational video series; supporting both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics, in partnership with the Diabetes Leadership Foundation.
Acknowledging a gap in diabetes education, the organization recognized that many resources provided to diabetes patients, often in printed format, fell flat. Patients were simply not paying attention to the small details that affect their daily lives when managing their diabetes, regardless of whether it was Type 1 or Type 2.
A diabetes diagnosis can bring information overload, confusion, stigma, or blame and a sense that symptom management can feel too complex or too time consuming for real life. Both series tackle this directly by delivering short, bite-sized videos with straightforward language, visual explanations, expert input, and include realistic, daily strategies that are easy to understand by all viewers.
Working with subject matter experts, each detail was carefully considered right down to the language chosen for the video series, and looked to solve the problem of feeling lost or unsupported after diagnosis by breaking difficult themes into practical, hopeful episodes that help people thrive instead of just survive.
Partnering with Diabetes Canada on the How 2 Type 1 & How 2 Type 2 video series directly tied into our goal of animating Thoughts That Matter because the videos break down a difficult, complex, and life-changing diagnosis in a way that is accurate, compassionate, and stigma-reducing and connects to every viewer.
With a distinct and mature brand design already in place, our work with Diabetes Canada carefully considered their existing style guide to ensure a unified visual identity, incorporating simple 3D visual elements and crafted, bespoke characters that elevated the animations.
At Thought Café, creative possibility is boundless. We partner seamlessly with your existing brand guidelines and visual language to elevate and amplify your communication strategy, or we craft a wholly original aesthetic that captures and elevates your organization’s public presence uniquely with clarity and distinction.
