Legal Literacy for Everyone

John Avi Socha of Hemmat Law Group was already familiar with our work on Crash Course when he reached out to us in 2025. Having grown up watching the series on YouTube, John was a longtime fan of both our animation style and our clear, approachable communication.

He recognized a significant gap in public legal literacy and envisioned an educational video series; beginning with family law, that would demystify the legal system for everyday people. The goal was to produce a valuable resource for Hemmat Law Group’s clients, the general public, and law students alike. The resulting 12-episode series, Family Law 101, explores key topics such as adoption, prenuptial agreements, and the real-world affordability of legal representation.

Building on the success of Family Law 101, Further Study expanded its library with Criminal Law 101. It serves as an accessible resource to help viewers understand their rights and better prepare for potential encounters with the justice system. Further expanding their educational offerings, the Hemmat Law Group team launched Take The Bar!, a bar-prep-style series presented in a question-and-answer format. In this ongoing series, John guides viewers through practice questions and core concepts across various practice areas, including contract law, corporate law, estates law, and environmental law.

Much like our work on the Crash Course channel, Further Study features strong, identifiable branding and logo design, a memorable theme song, and a warm, personable host. Yet its impact is distinctly its own. With the approachable style of the favorite law professor everyone wishes they had, John Avi Socha serves as the trusted legal mentor many people need, especially when navigating complex situations such as police interactions.

Animation Highlights

The creative side of this project was a lot of fun to develop. With a mission to create a unique and cohesive standout brand, we developed everything from the set design to the thumbnails. Drawing inspiration from eclectic New York law offices, we created a warm and inviting set that features vibrant colours, and perfectly complements a distinct mixed-media graphics style. The style approach was chosen to replicate the tactile feel of piles of documents in a law office, with textures and sketch-like animated loops to add a bit of 'orderly confusion' to the scenes, representing how many of us feel when having to deal with the many layers of the law.

character animation explorations

One of our favorite aspects of this project is how we were able to play with the scale of the scenes; the law or government were often visualized as collage-style giant hands that manipulated scenes, while 2D characters remained small, and at times powerless, capturing that universal feeling of being a small player against the massive forces of society.

At Thought Café, we often use a mixed media approach to help us communicate beyond visual imagery. Collages can tap into a viewer’s real-world, contextual reference while holding engagement. Combining illustration with realism allows us to speak two languages at the same time, bringing two different visual worlds together, resulting in a fantastic educational tool.
